Ísafjörður, Iceland
We began day twelve watching the approach to Ísafjörður as we finished breakfast in the Lido Market. Later this morning we will be embarking
on the excursion for the day to Vigur Island. When
we arrived on the dock, we
saw Le Bellot, another ship
that was docked there.
We boarded the boat to
Vigur Island and began the
thirty-minute cruise. When we arrived, we were
greeted by
Gísli, who,
along with his wife, are the owners of the
island. They live there year-round, doing
some farming and harvesting down from
the Eider ducks living on the island. There were also
many other seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and
Artic terns nesting there. The terns are very protective. As we walked among the nesting area, we
were told to hold a stick with a flag on top in order to
deter attacks.
Before we left the island, we visited the tiny post office, where we mailed a
few postcards to friends at home. Then we boarded the
boat to return to Ísafjörður. When we arrived, we explored
the town and found a restaurant called Tjöruhúsið. We had
to wait for lunch until the next seating, but it was worth the
wait. We had a delicious soup and several types of seafood.
Afterwards, we returned to Zuiderdam and waited for Eric and Pegi to return from their whale watching excursion. Here are some pictures from their adventure.
